FUN FACTS ABOUT OUR OCEANS
  1. Oceans are areas of salty water that fill enormous basins on the Earth's surface. Learn more.
  2. Over 70 percent of the Earth's surface is covered by water, and nearly all of that is saltwater from oceans and seas.  There are five oceans across our planet, and over 100 different seas.
  3. The five oceans on Earth are: Arctic Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean and Southern Ocean.
  4. The Pacific Ocean is the largest one.
  5. "Marine" is a word that describes oceans and seas, both of which have water that contain a lot of salt — we call it saltwater.
  6. Temperatures in marine habitats are different depending on where in the world they are, and the different water temperatures mean that fish and plants have had to adjust to living in those conditions.
  7. Creatures who live in marine habitats can breathe underwater or can hold their breath for a really long time, only coming up to the surface every now and then for air.  About three-fifths of all the fish species that we know about live in marine habitats.  Learn more about marine habitats.
  8. About one-third of marine species live in coral reefs, which are located in the tropics, on the eastern side of continents and around islands.
  9. Some of the strangest looking fish are those that live in the very deepest parts of the ocean, which can be more than 5 kilometres below the surface.  These fish have adapted to be able to stand the darkness and water pressure.  Learn more about the creatures at the bottom of the ocean.
  10. You can find mountains and volcanoes on the bottom of the oceans.
  11. The deepest point in the ocean is the Mariana Trench, which is located in the western Pacific Ocean about 124 miles east of the Mariana Islands and approximately 7 miles deep.
  12. The largest animal in the ocean is the Blue Whale.
  13. Earth is the only known planet that has oceans, as far as we know, and did you know that we have only explored less than 5 percent of all ocean life on Earth?
