Q+A: Sheltering In Place in Paris with Jaimee Gong of YoYo Mom

Posted by Jaq Jaq Bird on

At Jaq Jaq Bird, our team members all agree that although every individual's experience has been unique, a common realization during this season of sheltering in place is our strong desire for human connection.  With social interaction being limited to screens, may we never take for granted any future opportunity to simply hang out in the presence of our friends.
This week on The BirdFeed, allow us to virtually introduce you to a few of our Jaq Jaq Bird friends from around the world and share their experiences as they shelter-in-place.

Today, we invite you to get to know our friend, Jaimee Gong of YoYo Mom!

Jaimee of YoYo Mom

1.  TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF.

My name is Jaimee.  I live with my husband and two children in Paris, France.  Quite a few years ago I founded a website called YoYo Mom, which features the latest news in kids fashion including personal selections (fashion, toys, decoration, etc.), free giveaways, DIY activities and interesting links and articles from moms around the world.  At the same time, I also do freelance work in digital communications.

2.  HOW HAS YOUR JOB TRANSITIONED DURING SHELTER-IN-PLACE?

During the confinement (SIP time) in Paris, it's been a huge challenge to assist my kids with school and teach them to be independent with learning at a distance.  It’s difficult to juggle education, meals and work.  Being together 24 hours a day is also an interesting experience.  I am lucky to have an energetic family that takes responsibility for cooking and exercising.  However, sometimes it can be tiring!  I have to admit that I admire the teachers and how they do their jobs.  Trying to work and also manage the household has definitely become a big task.  My actual job has not changed much, as I have a lot of work that demands attention especially during these particular times.

3.  HOW HAVE YOU USED YOUR PROFESSIONAL SKILLS CREATIVELY OUTSIDE OF WORK?

In terms of creativity during the confinement, I am limitless.  Whether it is sewing, ceramics, origami, app designing, cooking, making pinhole cameras, photography, films, puzzles, reading or any other activity of the sort, I have been gung-ho.

4.  WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SPACE INSIDE YOUR HOME AND WHY?

In my home, we live in a shared courtyard so during the confinement, we are lucky to have a charming outdoor space to have fresh air and sometimes a bit of sunshine.  This is definitely one of my favorite spots.  However, inside, I also love our bedroom with an open bathtub and shower.  Another favorite room is the open kitchen, which opens up into the dining room and living room.  We spend most of our time here as a family.

5.  WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE UNPLUGGED ACTIVITY?

I am currently taking advantage of the digital library in Paris, which allows you to borrow six books per month.  I am currently reading The Restaurant of Love Regained by Ito Ogawa.

6.  WHAT IS THE ONE THING YOU HAVE DISCOVERED ABOUT YOURSELF WHILE SHELTERING IN PLACE?

During SIP, I have probably not taken the time to really think about myself.  I hope that will come in the next month!  However, I have had a lot of time to think about the people that I love that are close to me.  It has been interesting to catch up with close friends and family and speak more often (now via FaceTime, WhatsApp or Zoom).  Somehow, we are connecting and becoming closer due to the situation.  I am very happy for this.

Thank you, Jaimee, and we hope to see you soon!
